The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is an independent federal agency created in 1965. It is one of the largest funders of humanities programs in the United States. This timeline features important milestones in NEH's history.

Collections available to the public through the Public Reading Room include a wide variety of archival records relevant to the history of the NEH, including grant program guidelines, photographs from the Jefferson Lecture and other special events, press releases, and publications. We are continually adding items based on their historical significance and interest to the public. Learn more about the repository on the NEH website.
